Adventure Review
On Labor Day September 7, 2009, We took a canoe trip down the Big Walnut Creek in Putnam County, Indiana. This trip is a little over 2 miles in length. We borrowed our friends canoe and made an afternoon of this trip. We put in at the Pine Bluff covered bridge, and our take out area was the intersection of US 36 and the Big Walnut Creek. There is a pull off area on the westbound side of the highway to park your car for pulling out your canoe. See directions to put in below.
Positives of this trip:
- This float trip is uncrowded
- There a a couple of covered bridges that you will pass along the way
- Quiet and pretty waterway
Negatives:
- Water level was low this time of the year. Lots of portaging!
- Uncommercialized area, so be sure to pack accordingly.
- You need 2 cars. One to put in by the covered bridge and another at US36. The distance between the put in and take out is over 2 miles by stream and well over 5 miles via roads.
Directions:
From Indianapolis: Take I-465 to Exit #13 to US36 (also called Rockville Rd.) head west through Avon, Danville, and New Winchester. In the little town of Groveland look for County Road 500E and turn right (north). Take 500E north to 800N and turn right (east) then take the first left onto 525E . Take 525E (northbound) all the way to 900N. Turn left (west) on 900N and follow it until you come to the Pine Bluff covered bridge. You will see a parking area on the right side just before you get to the bridge. It is a small parking spot but there isn’t a lot of traffic here.
