Adventure Review

It took me 5 years to book my “Dream Hunt” to New Zealand. I was trying to find an outfitter that books Free Range Archery hunts bt not many do. After talking to many outfitters Gary Herbert of New Zealand Mountian Hunting told me he has free range hunts so I booked with him through his US agent Pinnacle Adventures (Fred Kloos). I shot a free range Gold Medal stag  but this is were the horror starts. After I attempted to score it into the SCI record books Gary refused to sign the required SCI paper work stating that it was an official free range stag. All parties including several SCI board members all agree this was a free range stag but Gary still refused to sign the paper work because of some political BS wording on the forms. He will sell you a free range hunt but if you harvest an animal on his “free range” land he will not sign the forms making it offical. So assentially he is NOT seeling you a free range hunt. All they are interested in is getting your Money after that you are just a number. I was told by the agent and I quote ” we dont have the time to worry about one stag” Pretty nice comment coming from a guy who depends on hunters to pay for his business. Bottom line is this, there are PLENTY of outfitters in NZ and booking agents to book with, take my advise and dont give yourself a headache with either of these two “businessmen”

Nice Stag! Sorry to hear about the politics, that is a shame. He is a fine animal.

Thanks, the whole thing was frustrating, cant believe an outfitter would do such a thing.

Glen,

We look forward to hearing about more of your outdoor adventures.

nice stag…..to bad about the hunt. glad you put the info on the site though, will help other hunters in the future!!

Nice stag. I hunted with another kiwi names Shane Johnston. I found him to be a pretty good bloke and we got on very well. I’m wondering if the time of year had anything to do with the difference between hunting a free range stag (in season) versus hunting an estate stag (no season). I don’t know, I did the estate hunt but the ranch was huge and most likely SCI would have called it free range. Just nosey but what did your stag score? Congrats anyway.
