Adventure Review
This turkey hunting Xperience was the one that hooked me on turkey hunting. My friend Jim and I went to what used to be Brush Creek in Jefferson County, Indiana. We had scouted out a great area where we would have a large creek at our backs and a large hayfield in front of us. We saw turkeys in the field the day we went to scout the area. Since this was a public land hunt, we knew we had to get there really early on opening day to get our spot. We arrived at 3am and got our spot. We set up an hour before daylight and waited for the sun to rise. It was a clear night and we were Xcited to get some turkey’s gobbling. We used 2 hen decoys on this mornings hunt. Just before first light we connected with several roosting gobblers. They were itching for the sun to come up so they could fly out of the roost. I had never heard so many turkeys gobbling in the woods. There were at least 5-7 gobblers answering our calls. We called for about and hour after sunrise and 2 jakes came bolting into our hen decoys. I was able to get a 15 yard shot at the first jake and took him down. Jim was patient and waited as the other jake seemed to be leaving town. However, the jake only ran away about 20 yards and realized his buddy was down and out. Then, the 2nd jake came running back to stomp his friend and Jim was able to get a clean shot on the 2nd bird. We were Xcited and were celebrating. 2 jakes down by 7:15 am. What a great hunt this was.
