Camping with Kids!

If you are just starting out on your camping adventures, or are an eXperienced camper, you  know that camping with kids can provide unusual obstacles! I have figured out, by trial and error, several things that have helped make camping easier.

We have found the number one thing you need most is “flexibility”!!!  It can be difficult for young kids to adjust sleeping in a tent.  Every noise from the outside can startle them awake or stir up images in their imaginations! We have found that if our kids are really tired and worn out from the day’s acitivites, they tend to go to sleep faster and stay asleep longer.   If you have a night time ritual of book reading or story telling, make sure you keep it when camping. It can make your child feel more secure and comfortable.

I always try to pick a campsite close enough to the bathrooms so it’s not a long walk in the middle of the night, but far enough away that your not getting the noise and smells.  We have tried the portable potties, but personally it was more of an inconvenience than just walking to the bathroom.  It’s always a great idea to get a good map of the campground and scope out good sites before you book your stay.

We have found that kids don’t really need any extra padding or an air mattress. They seem to do just fine in a sleeping bag.  This will help save on some packing space.  I know they even have sleeping bags with built-in padding now, which might be a better alternative since it all rolls up together.

When we have done our longer camping trips, I bought the big plastic “dressers” to keep our clothes and food in.  I just packed them up before we left then secured them on the trailer/truck.  Once we got there, I just put them in the tent!  It saves you from digging in bags looking for clothing, and seperated our kitchen supplies. I also store our camping gear in them when we are back at home.  It helps keep it organized and they are see thru so it’s easy to find something.

Camping is a great adventure for kids.  Maybe try a few trial runs in your back yard before you go for an actual trip.  That will help you to tweek your needs to fit your family and will help reduce stress on the actual trip.

I also tell people to expect dirt!  Especially where kids are concerned.  Honestly, I feel that if my kids are dirty, then they are having FUN!!!  You can only get so clean in a camp shower.  Make sure you take flip-flops or crocs for your shower time.

Above all, RELAX and go with the flow. What works for you now may not work on another trip depending on the amenities at the camp. I grew up camping and have continued the tradition with my kids.  It’s so enjoyable and relaxing when your sitting at a campfire, looking at the stars and having great conversation with your children.  Nothing can beat that!
